X2PPro 009 - Labels and Groups
Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at 8:42AM This is a technique I came up in the wee hours of the morning. It utilizes some features of Premiere Pro that FCP doesn’t have. I think its gonna be a staple in my workflow for cutting content. What do you think?

This is an awesome use of resources. I've been using Premiere for a long time, and I've been singing it's praises for years. Thanks for bringing so much attention to it, and giving me more "gotcha's" to show clients who are only knowledgable of FCP.

i do this too, but i use titles instead of color mattes
the advantage is that the titles can be seen over the video on the program monitor while editing, which is especially useful when scrubbing through many clips....
More so when you have hundreds of clips and are so zoomed-out of the timeline that you'd never be able to read their names.
also, i can render out roughcuts/assemblies for clients with these titles on the footage, and we can very easily make sure we're talking about the same section of video (even if it's a week later and she doesn't have the timecode in front of her).
I dedicate one track for all of these title/labels, and can very easily 'turn off' the entire track as I get further into the process (but this still leaves me with the names above the footage, without adding any rendering, just as you're doing).
it takes almost the same amount of time to do. I create a title, name it, copy that name, paste it as the on-screen text, and save, finally dragging it into place. The name on the timeline clip and on the Program screen is the same. You create a clip, then drag it in place, then have to rename it.
And yes, being able to group is amazing.
