The Rubik's Cube
Monday, April 4, 2011 at 10:22PM
30 years ago I learned how to do the Rubik’s Cube cuz… well… I’m a geek. Tonight we were shooting hands on a white board and at the end I had the crew allow me to do one more shot. I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time… So cool to have a nice “set”.

but did you figure out the rubik's cube on your own?
I tried to and can only get to the last row before i cry and give up!
Cool vid though.
Originally i did read a book... back in the summer of 1981... then I proceeded to devote ENTIRELY to much time to it. That was when I began to streamline the number of turns and rotations it took me to do it.
At the very height of my own insanity I could, in my minds eye, imagine a completed cube, then mix it up IN MY MIND and proceed to solve it IN MY MIND, keeping track of all the pieces... (sick, i know, and not something you normally share with anyone, especially on the internet). It was in those days that I was able to figure out moves and patterns that, at one point allowed me to TIE the world record, unofficially.
Back in those days the world record was 26 seconds and, I will be the first to admit, I got lucky that time and much of the bottom layer "fell into place".
I've watched the videos online these days and the kids that are into it now, are AMAZING! I did some reading and looked into it a few years back thinking... "wow, maybe I could get back into this?" I determined that to increase my time by, say... 10 seconds, I'd probably have to put a few hundred hours, maybe a few 1000 hours into it. CLEARLY, not worth my time these days. (Not that it ever was.)
The real key so solving the cube is visual acuity and pattern recognition.
Anyway, it was fun to do this tonight.
That kicks ASS.
All I can say, is that was amazing. I tried to follow your moves, as I'm a Rubik's novice, but you definitely make it look effortless. Lots of pattern recognition and thinking with your fingers. Hats off to you!
Does it make a difference where the colors are when you begin?
How old is the one you are using? Does that make a difference if it is older or new - is new tight?
